I too never had a Meccano steam engine, only electrical motors.

Some of them are proposed on ebay:

Issue 45 is available.

With this issue we begin to build the front part of the boom element.

The structure from issue 42 (A) is connected to the main part (B) using a 7-hole strip at the front extremity (C)

Image

The bracing is made with several perforated strips (D), a 9-hole angle girder (E) and several 3-hole angle girders (F)

Image

Some of the strips bear angle brackets (G) ; also note the special 3-hole angle girder (H) which extends the 9-hole angle girder (E)

Issue 47 is available.

It begins another boom element which will be connected to the previous one to form one side of the boom.

Here I have made the connection with long bolts and plastic spacers (the black parts) from my own Meccano stock ; the partwork model will use a different mechanism.

Issue 54 is available.

We keep building the second half of the boom element.

Here the two halves are still shown connected by long bolts bearing plastic spacers (the black parts), although the instructions are to build them separately (they will be connected later, by a different mechanism).
