Airfix Four Stroke Engine - A07870

Here's a little section of anybody who manages to find a really odd ball model that doesn't fit into any of the other catergories.

Airfix Four Stroke Engine - A07870

Postby Paul » Fri Sep 19, 2014 4:01 pm

Hi All,

I recently bought the Airfix Four Stroke Engine - A07870.

It costs £19.99, there are 68 pieces and no decals.

It is approx. 12.2 cm in length and 19.8 cm high.

The reason for buying this kit was to see if I can learn to spray slightly larger kits.

The kit requires the following Humbrol (or equivalent) paints:

3 - Brunswick Green (Hum, well I still have the Bentley lurking in the background!!!)
11 - Silver (although I've gone for 191 Chrome Silver)
19 - Bright Red
33 - Black Matt
54 - Brass
69 - Yellow
130 - White Satin (No Nights included!!!!)
27003 - Metalcote Polished Steel

I've not bought the matt black, as I already have some in my stash, the rest that I have bought, are all spray paints apart from the 130 white satin which is a tin of acrylic.

Looking forward to seeing you build this one Paul. I always wanted this kit as a kid, and still do !!

I have the beam engine kit from the same series at home, part made and in storage. I only hope I can remember which colour paints I used when I eventually get my hands on it again :?

The beam engine is a nice kit for it's age. I had that one as a kid and seem to remember that it was motorised. The modern version still has the moulded plastic parts for the battery holder, switch, etc, but none of the metal parts nor any mention of the motor in the instructions. Is the 4 stroke the same ?
Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,

The four stoke doesn't have any motorised parts (which is a real shame) :(

If Airfix had motorised it, they could have added more value to the kit both for themselves (in terms of profit! :) ) but also to customers and possibly have even more buyers for this. :)

Hum, as there are no decals, I think that the plaque could be a right swine to line in.

This is my first attempt at the plaque.

I've decided to try and use some black paint to highlight the letters that will still be red like the background colour of the plaque.

Obviously, I still need to tidy this lot up:

The plaque looks really good Paul ! Great idea using a wash to bring out the letters

Many thanks Mark :D

A pic of some of the outer parts dry fitted, though a lot of work and lining in still needed.

Luckily I have some of the red and yellow tins in my stash, though none of the Brunswick Green or Brass ! :angry-banghead: - it looks like another order of paint!!!! :)

Not convinced about the yellow to be honest. I think I would have used a metallic dark iron or something similar. Each to their own tho......

Hi Mark,
I've just followed the colour code for once, though I do agree with you :)

Hi Casp,

Many thanks for the K :D :D

I think I'm going to need to order some more tins of paint though, as I think that there is a great opportunity for more detailing on this kit than first appears or even Airfix mention - I think they've missed a trick on this re: extra sales of paints and adding value etc.! :)

Hi Steve,
Many thanks for the K :D :D

Yes it is the 69 yellow, I used a primer on all the parts before spraying, and the yellow was fine. I've also got a tin of it to help line in etc. :)

After Mark's comments, I'm just now wondering about the yellow

I do have a can of brass spray which I might be able to darken with applying a coat of grey primer before hand

After Mark's comments, I've now resprayed the internal colour, though it now means spraying the external parts again, Oh and lining the red properly!!!!:

I really hope it works, and you like the new colour Paul, otherwise I'll feel very guilty and have to learn to keep my trap shut

Heck Mark,

Constructive criticism (perhaps not the best word on the latter   ) has always what has made this forum stand out from any other, as all input is really appreciated by us all :D :D
