1848 Stage Coach

Here's a little section of anybody who manages to find a really odd ball model that doesn't fit into any of the other catergories.

Thanks for the link Casper.

I had a read of the instructions last night and realised that there's a lot that need sorting out, like the top rails only have one hole instead of two :angry-banghead: so that needs some work.

No brass rods all the kit gives you is brass coil which is a pain to get straigh, so new rods need there.

And the first thing I noticed was the wheels, they have designed-made them in four quarters for the main outer rims ok but then the spokes are only pushed into the main hub and then glued to the inner edge of the rim and four of the spokes glue on the joins of the outer rim so not a very strong design.

Personally I don't like that idea, so I'll be looking at drilling through the outer rim and placing the spokes in via these holes and also moving them slightly so there away from the joins. Hopefully that will make them stronger.

I wouldn't recommend this kit to anyone that hasn't build some kind of wooded ship before as there's a lot you need to sort out and plan ahead for :snooty:

Good idea moving the spokes, should hopefully add some extra strength.
I believe the wheel centers are out and will need plugging and re-drilling

Anyway the first thing I need to sort out is two jigs for building the wheels.

You could always build the wheels from scratch, http://www.guildofmodelwheelwrights.org ... niques.htm ( bottom of page)

The wheels are made from 4 outer parts 1 hub unit and 12 spokes made from strips.

The printed version is just something I was playing with while I waited for new hubs, the hubs in the kit were miss drilled.

First up was to get the outer sections to match-up

Image

Then to make a gig for fitting the centre parts.

All four wheels done.

Image

Image

The instruction tell you to take some brass strips and bend them around the wheel, this was a pain as not only does it have to go around the hub, the hub has a slight chamfer to it so when the brass strip is in contact with the inner edge the outer edge has a gap around it. I decided to not use the brass and instead use some copper tape that you use on plant pots to stop snails and slugs.

Image

Not 100% sold on the colour so I might order some gold coloured tape which might look a bit more like brass.

next is the main undercarriage section.

These where pre-shaped but you have to mark and cut in the cleat lines.

The instruction get you to paint all the parts before joining them, but I glued them first in order to same me from having to mark and remove paint so the wood glue could bond.

Once the glue was dry, I masked up the section that didn't need paint and painted them yellow.

Axles where made with 6mm dowel and then 2mm.

Those hubs are a bit rough. Your printed version is a great improvement. However, could you adjust the design so the area that takes the brass ring is parallel so it sits flat? Great work so far. Very tidy.
Cheers

Hi Mark.

The first set of hubs supplied where terrible, the replacment set where 100x better and are what I used.

The printed version was just me playing around I didn't use them.
