Caspers 1/12 1930 Bentley 4.5 litre Supercharged

Postby casper » Sat Feb 11, 2012 5:19 pm

I have been looking to get one of these kits since Airfix re-issued it but came across these and bought them both from the same seller for a great price. One has been started a little but only the the main frame and the other one is untouched. I have noticed though that the kit that was started is missing the two engine block sides 2A and 15A. Am i right in saying the parts are available from Airfix
Spent two hours checking both sets last night and there are two small broken pieces that can be fixed or replaced but the rest is all there. :D
Not sure when i will start building as i want to finish the E Type first and don't have the room.

Hi Paul
I didnt know that they were making new tooling Paul. So the last kit (A20440) would be the same as mine then, no changes since the first. Be nice to see what changes will be made.
Mine say on the box Kit series 20 Code 09398-1

I know Airfix are very very good at replacing parts for current kits. Not sure about old kits though. It is being re-released this year, but I don't think it's a new tooling. They don't say so on their web site, and I'm sure they would if it was updated.

I saw that auction and thought about bidding on it, but decided against it. I think you got a bargain there.
Cheers

I think so Mark,
the one had been started but only part of engine, frame and rear tank were glued, the rest came apart for re assembling so i,m really happy about that. Also the wheels but the tyres came off ok so i can paint them. Couple of broken parts but nothing that cant be fixed. Will be changeling for me but should have fun doing it.

Hi Casp,

Are you going to get some british tan leather (from Pittards) for the seats?

As that was my thought - well, when Airfix re-issue it !

i checked Pittards Paul and they dont stock the green. unless i missed it
but i think i have found a matt faux leather on ebay thats very thin. I think Pittards leather may be too thick for this scale. I may even paint it yet. Lots of researching to do.
I will try to get a photo of the contents later.

Hi Casp,

I think the original seats were tan, rather than green - though I could be mistaken as per usual !

NB - guage C or B should be OK, though not A etc etc !

I am going to paint the seats Paul, There is plenty of detail on them and they are very small compared to the E-type seats. but i was looking at doing the cabin in leather or similar. Not sure as yet, still researching the car.

Hi Casp,

After getting the job, I might now go for this, though no doubt it'll be in a box (a bit like the Cat) for quite a while!

Have you had any further thoughts on the Bentley yet?

Hi Paul. great news m8. well done.
I have been through the kits again and will need some new decals as these are no good. Also need another engine block for the second car, was going to build the two in tandem but that would mean i will have to make a resin copy of the two parts above but this would be a first for me. Other than that i could just do the one kit and wait for the re-release and contact Airfix to get new decals and the two engine parts. I have been looking on the web for the decals but up to now have had no luck.

Hi Casp,

I've tried to scan decent decals (re: Little Nellie) but to no avail, I think that you might have the right answer on this - Hum

I'd advise making the parts as originally supplied - unless you're going for a special mod...
so just take the pieces from the second kit and make the silicone casting patterns...

yes casp,
take the parts as is, that's the best - make sure the casting form is made up like this:
the outer engine skin should point to the bottom of the finished casting form and the second half of the form should go from above,
when making the form glue a small diameter sprue (needs to stick out from the silicone on top of the casting form so you have an air channel going right through the surface of the form) to the block inner parts which are going to hold the internal parts - this way the air/resin will be able do exit the form. if not made up like this, you'll always end up with the air trapped inside and the part casting will be incomplete...
remember, when starting making the form the part looking upwards will eventually become the bottom piece -
glue the sprue parts onto the block just when you've cast the first half and you've turned it around to do the second half...

Hi Morrigan
unfortunately the decals are really bad from both kits. The previous owner used the dash clocks decals and they look pretty good but the rest are faded and cracked.
I did receive an e-mail from an ebay member that i out bid on the kits asking if i would conciser selling him the used kit but i am hoping to build the two if i can obtain the missing engine parts from Airfix, if not i will have a go at casting the parts myself . The chap i out bid has kindly said that he would scan the decals from his incomplete set for me so i,m hoping to hear from him soon and then i can make my own set.
