Lovely work Mr C!
Being new to car kits, I have delved into various websites and have much too much infor buzzing around my head. In fact I have 'mislaid' info and now cannot re-locate it! Oh dear. If it was bits and pieces for aircraft I would know where to go.
Could someone point me in the right direction (websites - links etc) for the following to help with my attempt on the Airfix Bentley please?

1) Where to obtain the very thin leather as used on your Bentley? Adhesive?

2) Did I read somewhere that 'tights' nylon can be used as an alternative for a textured finish? If so, what adhesive?

3) Leather straps for the engine cowlings (bonnet). The kit rubber versions are poor. I have made some thinner versions using plastic card which are more scale in appearance, but are other versions available?

4) Love those bolts that secured your wheels to the chassis. Website?

Questions, questions! Any information would be gratefully received.

Peter

been a busy morning clearing snow :occasion-snowman:
Hi sparbucks, i purchased my leather off ebay but cant remember what the thickness was. I think it was about 0.7mm
The micro nuts and bolts were from Keith at http://www.modellingtimbers.co.uk/1.html
The straps i made from cut strips of brown leather and the buckles from silver wire
hope this helps :)

Hi Paul :)
I did buy some 1/6th action figure rifle straps but the buckles were all wrong and the straps looked very thin so cut two strips off the brown leather you kindly sent me last year and made my own, much stronger. I really must get the Bentley out and finish the hood. Need some pins for the studs.

Hi Casp,
With the tan leather, did you have to sandwich it, to make it thicker? :)

I had some thicker leather that was about 1.5mm thick Paul and it was better and stronger for the job and it stretched allowing a tight fit over the bonnet.

I've forgotten, but what did you use to make the buckles?

I've forgotten, but what did you use to make the buckles?

I made them from some of my wifes old silver earrings :shifty: :)

Many thanks for the advice Casp, though I doubt the QQM would allow me to do that ! :D

I tried the Tamiya weathering master set A on one of the spare wheels from my second kit just to see what it looks like. Its a very fine powder in sand, light sand and mud.
If you over do it with the powder its very easy to remove. Not sure how you can fix weathering powders
The tires look a lot better with the weathering powder, they looked too black and shiny before and i tried to get some on the wheel spokes and rim. The good thing about this stuff is you can add or remove if you want till you get the required finish. I think i may try it on the chassis and different areas around the car towards the end of the build.

Hi Casp,
I noticed the other that the tyres on the Cat aren't brilliant, do you reckon this could be used to tone them down, or do they just need painting matt black, sorry for crossing over on the threads (no tread included!) :)

don't think i would paint them Paul. I read somewhere that bicarb of soda can be used to dull tires down but not used that method so wouldnt recommend doing it. These are very fine powders so i thought i would try some out on a spare wheel first. I would like to try what BA said about lightly weathering/spraying from the direction of travel in different shades. Looks a bit to shiny at the moment.

Hi Casp,
Would it be possible for you to do the BA effect with a Brush in the right direction , get the effect and then seal it somehow ? :)

You can get a fixer for them. MIG Productions do them. I've got some, but haven't used the powders yet. I was going to try them out on my Airfix Mk 1 tank that I built for the Xmas comp a couple of years ago, but haven't got round to it yet.
Cheers

Is it the pigment fixer Mark. I see the fixer has to go on first then the pigment or powder second.
MIG have some interesting products, will have to try a few out.

Hi Casp/Mark/Paul - re tyres:

Tamiya have recently introduced a new matt tyre paint which is very realistic in their XF acrylic range. Failing that, their NATO Black also works very well on tyres as it is more grey and not exactly black at all! These will provide great base colours for the powders to work their magic.

Sent from hot and humid Bangkok - no model shops found so have failed miserably :violin:

Yes, that's the stuff. I've always seen it applied on top of the powders. Not sure why it doesn't make them run all over the place though. I'm going to have to try them out soon.

There is quite a good DVD on how to use powders by MIG Productions, although you should be able to get it cheaper than this seller.
