Despite been a born and bred Kiwi, I've never been to our beautiful South Island, well I've been to Christchurch Airport twice
The climate is also very different to the upper north Island, and winters involve a lot of that white stuff that falls out of the sky so lots of winter woolies were packed.

When descent starts, the Air New Zealand crew hands out lollies, if there are kiddies on board they get given the honor of doing the rounds with the lolly baskets.
With the World cup due to start, there was a special All black lolly, blackberry flavour of course!:

Driving through the Canterbury plains and Southern Alps in the lingering twilight, being a few degrees closer to the South Pole than Auckland I was amazed how long the light lingered after sunset.

I was briefly let out of the car to play in the snow and make a wee snowperson. Bottle caps left behind by previous visitors were upcycled into snow person eyes:

Speights is the preferred brew in these parts, drinking anything else may get one hung, drawn and quartered.
