Finally ticked this one off my bucket list. Been busting to get to Warbirds over Wanaka for ages, and finally everything clicked into place :D
Depending on how keen/bonkers you are this 1 to 4 day event.

Wanaka is hidden away in the Mountains near the bottom of NZ
Image

Off the beaten track it may be, but as you will see the location is superb!

Thanks to some fantastic airfares, I flew to Christchurch then hopped on an ATR72 to Queenstown. You can fly direct to Queenstown but I prefer the lower slower turboprop to make the most of the scenery!

As its Air NZ's 75th year the cups have flying boats on them :D :-)
Image

Me and HWMBO drove along the shores of these lakes last year, you can just make out the spillway and curved line of the Lake Benmore earth dam

ground view

The approach into Queenstown involves tip toeing down a valley between mountain peaks. Wheeee!

Image

The Airport cafe Airspresso serves a mean toasted sandwich, so mean it has to be stabbed before it is served. :o
Image

Its then a shuttle bus through the valleys to Wanaka.

As Wanaka is a resort town, it being Easter and a big event on, accommodation prices were eyewatering so Hotel in a bag it is! A tent on a campervan sized site is luxurious!

Mission control setup!

have to agree. Love their presentation !!

Conversely, the worst airline food I've had was Air China....
The best airline food I've had is Virgin Asian Vegetarian food. You usually get a really nice curry ! (you also get curry for breakfast, but you gotta take the rough with the smooth....)

Looks like an interesting programme. I love the contexts: "Me109 shoots down Anson, does victory roll, strafes airfield, Spitfire scrambles" :D Reminds me of the WWI "wings over the trenches"display they did at the Flywheel festival next to my village last year.

Have a great time Morrigan!

Will you be joining our Mossie throng?

Watch this space for the Anson getting shot down! And yes I will be joining the swarm of Mossies in due course

This is the view that you get to enjoy walking along the lakefront from the Camp ground to and from the Shuttle bus to the Airshow.

On entry, first stop was the grandstand enclosure to pick up my Gold Pass. Well worth it to be guaranteed a good view and ready access to refreshments and posh loos!
Image

Righto then, Aeroplane time :D
Apologies in advance , thanks to Photobucket creating its own special order, the photos are a bit out of sequence.

The USAF kindly demoed the mighty C-17 Globemaster III, this one is normally based in Hawaii.
You almost need an un-zoom lens for this beast!

We also got some plane vs V8 Supercar and MV Augusta bike racing/ hooliganing. The winged challenger is that mad Lithuanian Jurgis Kairys and his Juka:

Nah. This is a flock of Tiger Moths :D

They were doing an inch-perfect Red Arrows display at 60 knots, instead of the usual 350. :laughing-rolling:

During the lunch intervals, the War Horse crew staged a mock battle in front of the grand stands.
The german scout is really a Buick as WWII German Armour is a little bit rare down here!

The Air Bandits, Jurgis Kairys and NZ's own Rob Fry put on a chaotic high energy display, this is a real test of Autofocus motors!
