Mark's Bell X-1

Seeing as some of us like to build small models, I've created the Tiny Model Challenge. Feel free to post build diaries of any tiny models.

Mark's Bell X-1

Postby Mark » Thu Dec 22, 2011 4:51 pm

I didn't think I was going to have time ot make an entry this year, but.... inspired by Chill's microscopic entry, and I happened to stumble across this little gem on fleabay.

Image

Dragon do a 1/144 Bell X-1, clearview model with interior. You actually get two models in one box, so you can do one clear, one painted, or any other variation.

Image
Here are the parts. It's all very tiny.

Image
The fuz is clear. It's a very clever slide mould, so the fuz in moulded in two secions, front and back. Makes it a right swine to paint the inside ! It does make it easier inserting the interior parts though.

Image
Here is the clear parts onthe box lid. It shows them up slightly better.

Image
Here is the cockpit assembled. 7 pieces in this tiny little assembly. Enough to make you want to use naughty words ! I'm not going to go overboard with painting or detailing as it's barely visible inthe finised model.

I'm not adding the rest of the interior as I'm going to paint the model orange.
Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,

Are you going to do both of the variations, or just the one?

NB, It looks even smaller than Chill's ...... If you pardon the expression !

I reckon that with the decals being so small, they'll be a real swine to do

It is one of my favourite planes.

More progress. Here is the finished cockpit. I jsut painted the seat pad brown and gave it all a black wash.

Image

This is all you can see once it's installed. The clear fuz is painted green on the inside.

Image

The inside of the u/c bay is installed in the rear fuz. You have the option of adding an engine and fuel tanks as well if you wish, but I left them out as they wont be seen.

PS. You can see a lot more detail in the photos that you can in real life. It's an amazing moulding. (Probably says more about my eyes than anything else  )

Thats when you tell him he will need to buy you a hanger to fit models that are big enough for him to see and then run for it.

Thanks. It was Vallejo's black dipping wash. To be honest, I prefer an oil & thinner wash, but this is quick.

More progress.

Here is the nose and tail section of the fuz united and the tail feather fitted.

Image

Then the wings go on.

Image

Finally the u/c doors. Made a bit of a pig's ear with these. I only realised how bad they were when I looked at the photo. Oh well...... too late to fix it now. I'm electing to do a flying configuration, although there isn't a pilot included. Not that you can see much through the windshield anyway.

Image

Now she is ready for painting.
Cheers
