DaAgostini 1/4 scale Easy Rider chopper

Postby Morris » Thu May 31, 2018 6:48 am

I received the first or initial order of the kit - I've never tried a DeAgostini kit before - 1/4 scale is large(!) and you have to down load an Instruction PDF off of the site....ImageImageImageImageImage

   was seriously thinking getting this one, but as s.w.m.b.o gently, ahem, pointed out I've spent more than I can really afford on the M.F.H kits

I hear you, I'll be lucky if I get tea night (or wear it) after S.W.M.B.O. walked in whilst I was opening it..... :(

Okay, steps 1-2-3 - - The tank is heavy so don't drop like I did taking it form the plastic tray - nicked a star on the chair leg.....very tiny but was aggravating - :angry-banghead: The rest was straight forward - :D ImageImageImageImageImage

Hi Casper, the centre of the wheel to top of the fork yoke is 10" - including the handle bars - 15" - its big ( or it is to me, my first 1/4 scale partwork...)

The '3rd phase arrived - And I got stuck into that yesterday afternoon. It's mainly some handle par mounted bits plus the two exhausts (long and short or front and rear, as usual for a Harley V-twin) - The very tiny bolts and nuts for the exhaust clamps was a challenge for my fat stiff fingers and less that optimal eyesight. (i.e. I'm an old mannie... ;) - So a spent a good part of the afternoon on my hands and knees paying homage to the carpet monster to return my bits and pieces I air launched or dropped..... :angry-banghead: - Anyway; pics to follow in sequence....

Very good work Morris, but...
there is no reason for getting jealous, Mark.

I started my kit in August, experiencing extremely hard to move screws for the tank fixing latches.
O.K., there must be colour in the threads, use WD40, drive the screws in and out to get the colour out of the threads and it should work. It didn't. I had to use brute force on the tiny screwheads with the flimsy srewdriver to manage the screws getting turned in so far the latches are just fixed.
With pak 2, I immediately got stuck with the following issue:
2 of the screws holding the upper handlebar clamp to the lower clamp broke during tightening due to bad manufacturing of either the screw and/or the lower clamp threads. You can whitness the operation in the Modelspace youtube video named "Official Build Your Own Easy Rider Motorcycle Build Diary - Pack 2" between 1:26 and 2:29.
Morris pictures show this sequence also in pictures, b.t.w., Morris, how did your "bolts" went in?

After recognizing the threads are not good after the first turn by hand, I tried in vain to make the threads going by turning the screws in and out several times, adding WD40 to make them go. It didn't really help to much, after some threads the screws stopped much to early.
When I finally had to lock them to get the handlebar fixed, 2 screw heads broke loose, the other 2 possible will if I ever trie to reopen them. The same applies to the front wheel axle screw, it showed exactly the same deficiencies during assembly but improved by the in/out and WD40 treatment.

Concerning my skills, I am building models since almost 50 years, are a professional mechanic (masters degree) and I own the original Harley Motorbikes and maintain them. Think I am used to move screws into threads carefully, if they fit.

I sent modelspace a complaint Email on 29th of August 2018 asking for replacement of the defect parts and they answered first on 10th of September 2018. I was promissed to get the replacement parts which De Agostini never delivered since that despite 3 reminders from my side.

In the meantime pak 3 and 4 have arrived without spare parts.

I wanted this kit so much, as the real Captain America chopper is part of my live and ignited my passion for motorcycle riding and buy the real thing later in my live.
For me it is just the symbol for the illusion of freedom, it was meant for. So I was really enthusiastic when this kit was released by De Agostini.

After all, mistakes happen, to all of us, so why not to De Agostini, but they care a sh... for the remedy of their mistakes.
It seeems they have a very bad or no quality control of their kit and they take the hell of a money for that scrap.

I cannot recommend De Agostinis Captain America chopper in 1:4 scale due to the mentioned combination of bad quality and even worse service.
I told them I will go public with this case if they will not remedy the damage, but they don't care even about this. So, here I am with my story.
