Here is my diary for Deagostini Build Millennium Falcon issue 1 to 25.

I will continue issues 26 to 50, 51 to 75 and 76 to 100 in other threads at a later date.

Roy's Build The Millennium Falcon-Part 1 (Issues 1 to 25)

Postby royjess » Fri Jan 09, 2015 8:45 pm

Issue 1

The first thing that I've notice about this partwork build compare to the Hachette Black Pearl is the quality. Not only are the parts very good quality, but so is the paper that each issue is printed on.

The instructions seem a bit crammed onto a few pages and smaller, a bit trickier to follow compared to the Black Pearl.

So far I have followed the instructions and fitted the sticky back panel decor for the cockpit as well as the guns together.

It don't look like there will be much room for modification or adding too much detail or paints as each part is already detailed. I believe that the only parts that will require painting are any metal parts.

To be continued....

Issue 2

It's not even been a week since I've firs subscribed to this partwork and issue 2 and 3 arrives

Certainly a big improvement compared to the Hachette Black Pearl first deliveries.

With this issue, you start to build the frame work, apply the chess top to the table and also fit control panel. To line up the control panel, I used three pins popped into each hole in the sticker (the fourth hole didn't go all the way though on the plastic part of the control panel) to guide the sticker into place.

This issue also explains how to fit the cannon to the turret, but advise against doing this until a later date.

I also received my 1st fee gift which is a T shirt.

Issue 3

I take back the point that I mentioned that these issues were printed on better quality paper. Issue 3 was printed on cheaper paper and the pages were no longer printed on a high gloss paper. I presume the first 2 issues were to make the issues look better for initially roping us in to purchasing these.

Onto the model. This issue included parts to add to the cockpit. Door, seats, control sticks etc..

I did find that two of the control levers were quiet lose, so at a later date I might do something to ensure a tighter fit.

No glue has been required in this build so far, everything just slots, clips or screw together. Each issue has been very easy and quick to put together.

Thank you casp, it looks like it's going to be a high quality detail model which is easily built with great ease and with very little effort :D

no extra details planned roy? I see a lot of potential in the cockpit even at this early stage...

I'm sure I'll add some detailing. I believe that the metal castings will need painting. I'm going to wait to see if the instructions give some guidance at a later date. I've also thought about illuminating some of the center console using fiber optics and maybe adding some detail to the seating. I've yet to find some time to study some photos of the cockpit.

Corrective surgery performed on the turret of my Millennium Falcon to correct the orientation of the turret :auto-ambulance:

Surgically removed the turret with a surgeons knife (as recommended by Darron  )

ImageRBTMFP1 Mon 19 Jan 15 1 by Roy Lee, on Flickr

The rough edges where given a manicure with a soft spongy nail file. All glued back in place the correct orientation and held by clamps until glue dries.

Surgery a success

Here is a quote taken from the Deag forum by Deag which explains what to expect with adding extra detailing to the cockpit.

All parts provided are moulded in self-coloured materials that approximate the original filming miniature, and some have additional paint or antiquing applied to enable builders who aren’t confident about doing their own painting to achieve a realistic result.
For those who want to build the ultimate replica and make their model as close as possible to the original, we will be providing additional information throughout the build, showing how to apply extra paint details and effects. Where appropriate, we will include close-up photographs of the ILM model to use as reference.
The first of these expert painting courses will cover the cockpit interior, and appears in Issue 7. There is no need to paint the parts prior to this point, as they will not have been permanently assembled. We recommend waiting until then, not only because the issue will include useful information, but also because it is easier to achieve a good result by painting similar areas of the model at the same time.

Issue 4

Came with a free binder.

ImageRBTMFP1 Thur 29 Jan 15 1 by Roy Lee, on Flickr

Took around ten minutes to add some more metal framework and to screw on the plastic panel. Also there is a front panel to fit onto the front of the control panel of the cockpit.

I must mention that the metal framework is starting to feel like it has some weight to it. The complete build is going to be heavy :o

Issue 5

These came with cockpit sides, LED and resistors circuit board to back lit the cockpit and the cockpit corridor.

ImageRBTMFP1 Fri 30 Jan 15 1 by Roy Lee, on Flickr

LED back lights fitted.

ImageRBTMFP1 Fri 30 Jan 15 2 by Roy Lee, on Flickr

The cockpit sides and corridor fitted.

ImageRBTMFP1 Fri 30 Jan 15 3 by Roy Lee, on Flickr

The instructions tells you not to glue anything together at this moment in time. I believe that you will need to take all apart again to fit the wiring loom and to add detail/paint.

Issue 6

This issue came with the nose cone. The windows are not correct. The sides either need to be slightly higher or the front ones need to be lower. The front windows shouldn't be inline with the side ones.

Also some control levers and the over head panel with stick on decor to represent more lights switches etc...

Issue 7

With this issue you start to build the interior seating and sleeping pod. Unfortunately I forgot to take some photos before I started on the next issue so I've posted a photo from the mag instead.

ImageRBTMFP1 Tue 3 March 15 1 by Roy Lee, on Flickr

Also you are given instructions for adding some paint to the interior of the cockpit. I've added detailing to the center console and side panels as well as the front end of the control panel. I've also weathered the seats. Every thing is then glued together. The only thing that I've not glued is the two rear navigation seats as I'm considering either modifying these or replacing these with some upgrades.

Issue 8

With this issue, you prep the flooring with using ink. I personally used a very fine ink pen which worked well. I might mod the flooring yet

Finished off the seating by adding the back support cushions. The sleeping pod was also completed with non working lights. You also had to add some switches and bits to the control panel. Both the control panel and the control/lights of the top of the seating furniture also had some paint added to high light the detail. The rear of the seating back support cushions were filled in with green filler and are now waiting to be painted.
