The 3D upgrades are designed to fit the origninal Nose Cone and with the parts that came with 21, they seem very good quality and hopefully not only will we get a very decent new nose cone, but also a retool on the upper sections that wasn't up to scratch. Obviously I will check out the new cone before I decide, but I will use it if it is an excellently produced.

tiking wrote:Very nicely detailed. I don't understand the lighteing system. It looks complicated just for lighting up the interior. Why so complex? I want to do something similiar but don't know how to. I thought it was just a matter of using one light source and lots of small fiber optics.

So far I've not fitted any lighting to the cockpit. The original parts simply make use of illuminating the back wall with a back light shining through the printed sticker. With regards to the 3D upgrades I was going to use fiber optics, but if I could simply shine a back light through the back wall, then there is no need for the fiber optics. The cockpit console had no holes for fiber optics, but a LED bulb shining though where the paint was scraped away was the easiest method. The side walls had no space between them and the tubing, so fiber optics would be useless as the fibers would need to be bent too tighter curve or even kinked to fit.

I'm hoping that a EL lamp or tape will fit in-between the wall and tube to illuminate the side walls. The two reasons for using fiber optics is to have the lighting source away from the actual area i.e.. for serving a blown bulb or not being able to fit a LED in the area to be lit up etc.. and for individually lighting up the bulbs to make them chase etc... With the cockpit, the bulbs can go directly behind where you want the light to show through and also when I've watch the movies, it appears that the lights were either on or off together not chasing individually.

In the above photos, I either had the natural sun light shining through the back wall or I held the cockpit up to my kitchen under unit light.

Thank you Kim, but I don't need a "P" at this moment in time ;)

Back to my build

Issue 19

The underside recess pipes were fitted together and painted.

Another arch cushion made up and fitted to the second level corridor which I also used black ink to highlight the floor.

The big question here, have I've crossed the line with turning my movie prop into a model?

OK the original DeAgostini cockpit and console are not very detail or film set accurate, but the original parts are very much close to the actual movie prop.

So I've decided to purchase a second copy of issues 5&6 which contains a new cockpit tube and cockpit tube parts. I'm hoping that I'll be able to fix it so that I can change the cockpits over so that I can either have the original movie prop on display without any mods and no additional lighting or change it for my more detailed film set accurate cockpit complete with the additional lighting.

It should be noted, that if you're going for accurate film prop, you'll need to remove the rear cockpit seats and move the rear cockpit wall forward. The front seats and instrument panel are accurate to the move prop.

The current DeAg cockpit is a great mix of accuracy between the filming prop and screen cockpit, exactly like the Master Replicas Falcon.

Thanks Casper.

My EL lamp arrived a few weeks ago and looks great, the only thing is that it runs of over 100 Volts :o but low amps so it can give you a very painful shock without killing you :o . It apparently have a life of around 400 hours which is not a lot.

I've been working on finishing the cockpit and painting my previous Shapeways orders, but ran out of gloss varnish, so the build has temporally came to an end. I've now more gloss and will resume painting and the build soon, will post updates with pics soon.

More shapeways 3D printing parts arrived today.

Upgrades on the seating. It looks like I'll have to remove the lights either from the bunk bed or the seating back. I'll probably try and remove these from the bunk beds as the seating back lights seem more accurate.

I've also ordered C3PO and another R2 D2, this time the one on the sprue, hopefully I might be able to modifier this one to have R2 D2 without the 3rd leg.

Just been building my C3PO and R2 D2 from shapeways designed by tengel http://www.shapeways.com/designer/tengel

C3PO was tricky to put together, the arms and legs connecting rod didn't fit, so I cut and sanded these flat before I glued. C3PO elbows sat tightly against his waist which is not how he holds his arms, so I modify the joints and re-positions the arms to have his elbows sticking out. I think he will look a lot better once painted. I still think that he is a tad too big for the scale.

The R2 D2 was the one on a sprue which I modify to have only the two legs. I had to cut the feet off and sand the joint so that his feet allowed him to stand upright as oppose to having the legs at an angle. The upper leg joints I sanded flat to also allow his legs to sit upright.

I also sanded off the light at the front of the bunk bed to accommodate the light that has been attached to the new shapeways seating designed by Tony RR http://www.shapeways.com/shops/308bits? ... +DeAgo&s=0 . In removing the light, I also remove the paint and this will be repainted.

The R2 D2 which is painted is the other one from shapeways designed by Tony RR, I've left him with three feet and I now have the options which R2 unit I wish to use. He is still waiting for a final coat of gloss varnish.

I agree with remrafian on R2D2, the three legged version looks great but its nice to have two. Look forward to seeing the second one painted roy.
C3PO looks really good and much better with the kicked out elbows, would look good in gold leaf :)

I think it depends on what scene I going to recreate within the falcon. If it whilst Luke is training and chewy, C3PO and R2 playing Dejarik, then R2 is only on the two feet.

Issue 24

More metal framework and coverings. The bottom half of the ship is now half completed.

It no longer fits inside the storage box that I was using, so now it will have to sit on top.

Now getting a feel for the size which isn't too big and the weight which is going to be heavy!

Issue 25

Some cushions to fit to some internal walls, which I've got no idea where these are going to go, but all will be revealed in a later issue.

There are some grey pegs which replace some of the gold screws used to screw the walls together in the hold.

It's for the corridor to the gun turrets. :)

Originally in ANH the turret ladder was directly off the main walkway, but when they rebuilt the set for ESB they made a walkway to the turrets. This was to keep the interior of the falcon in scale with the exterior, as the positioning of the turrets on the studio model could not have physically fit where the turret set was in ANH.

You'll notice the angular cutout on two of the pieces with the cushions, this will match up with the hexagonal shape of the turret. You'll also notice that it matches up with the missing part of the wall in the main hold, near the engineering station.

After issue 27 the only remaining parts of the interior will be the turrets themselves. The rest will be completed. :)

EDIT: whoops, I mean issue 28. There's one last corridor ring in issue 28. :p

Thanks Jinnai

I've now completed two cockpits, one is built as instructed (right hand) and the other is modified using shapeways parts (Left hand), both completed with lights. The remainder of the photos only show's the shapeways one.

The side walls were plugged with fiber optics and then the ends painted with glass paint. The side walls were lit up with using an EL lamp and the rear using LED's

Unfortunately, it's not easy to capture the lights on camera effectively.
