Chadders' Entry: Gundam Barbatos

Postby Chadders87 » Fri Dec 04, 2015 11:46 pm

This year I am going for something easier as last years disaster paper craft kit ended up in the bin, and something fairly quick since I am a slow modeller.

Also, something different - A Gundam model kit: Barbatos

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10338392
Cost was £11.90 inc postage :D

I plan to repaint everything so the pre coloured sprues included are not not me cheating :superlglue:

It does look like a good number of participants and a great variety of models this year. Just hope mine arrives in time... email confirmation states 2 -14 weeks

Looks like I will be able to start now!

Inside the box were 2 packs of parts in various colours, and a sticker sheet.
Detail of the parts looks quite nice, and the forming is perfect with no flash or imperfections at all.
Instructions are all in gobbledygook, though the pictures look fairly easy to follow.

Now onto the planning...

You do realise it has taken me 7 months to part complete the Suzuki RGV-r!! I am a doddler with a toddler  I get a few evenings free a week which is 2-5 hours of modelling

If needed, I intend to take a day off when SWMBO is working and the toddler is at Nursery to finish it

These are superb quality kits. The fit is usually perfect.

There is no need to use glue, but it's advisable if you're going to sand the join lines and paint it.

Are you planning to paint him, or leave him in the recoloured plastic ?

I am completely undecided on what to do with him now. Originally I planned to fill seams, paint, and weather...but wasn't expecting this level of quality or colour separation.

I think first things first I'll build as is with no glue and see how he looks, then decide if I want to disassemble and touch up.

Well here he is. Note this isn't the finished piece, just a test run of the build to see what I can do to it.

Took around 3 hours yesterday from start to finish. The parts are all dry fitted as no glue was necessary at all, so the disassembly should be fine.

I made a bit of progress last night. I have decided to limit how many parts are fully repainted as the finish is actually quite good already, though I have re-done some parts that needed more depth of colour.

I used Vallejo Air "French Blue" and mixed in a drop of Tamiya "Chrome Silver" to give it a slight metallic shimmer

I took out all the yellow pieces and sprayed them with Tamiyas "Gold Leaf". Though I missed one in the head section but that can be brushed later.
Image

The jetpack part was sprayed in Tamiyas "Metallic Grey", and some Flat Black was added to the mix before I painted the inside.
Image

The weapons have both been coated in Tamiya "Gun Metal" which will act as a base for dry brushing details.
