Airfix 1/24 Hellcat

Postby snapdragon » Thu Nov 15, 2018 6:12 pm

Telfords' surprise announcement which caused a large stir and abnormal crowds around the Airfix stand was the announcement of a 1/24 Hellcat.

After their previous announcement that they were discontinuing most of the 1/24 scale kits most people surmised that they were pulling out of the 1/24 scale market citing development costs.

Here's the article on the Airfix website with pictures of the test shot and CAD renders

https://www.airfix.com/uk-en/news/workbench/airfix-new-tooling-announcement-for-scale-modelworld-2018

Expected release is April/May 2019 and a RRP of £120

It is interesting to note that when Airfix announces a new 1/72 or 1/48 kit people just wander past and glance it it. When they announce a new tooled 1/24 kit then you can't get anywhere close for people! it was the same with the Tiffys!

Just so that you know..... I have already bought one in my mind!

I would like to see them go back and redo the Hurricane, Spitfire, FW190 and ME 109 and bring them up to the standards that I have seen with the Tiffy and now the Hellcat but maybe a Corsair or an accurate Zero would be good! (Trumpeter's offering has shape issues!)

:text-goodpost: Snaps , very true to me . When I see an announcement of a new small kit just keep walking , but stop when it about 1/24 . Got five of them , like you say they do need revamping but worth it. Will try to get Hellcat when it comes down in price . I wanted a 262 :(

Les... I would wait until release and see what the street price is - especially on Ebay.

If £119.99 is Airfix's official retail price, then some places will have it for less as they will have been able to buy wholesale or trade and then add a bit of profit.

Jadlam is a good place to start as they have had Typhoons at £55 during a sale.

I think I will get one at a reasonable price (£100-110) and then hang on for a jadlam sale and see what price they drop to for another.

I could well be in darkest Eastern Europe in April this year meeting the girls and leading guerrilla warfare against the Russians :laughing-rolling: that's if they can get me out of bed and away from the girls long enough! :o :auto-ambulance:

It is nice to see that Airfix can surprise us once in a while!

It does look rather nice. I'd be tempted, but 1/24 is a bit too big for me.

Found it for £107.99

Nice looking kit and as the wings fold back shouldn't take up much room width wise.

Of course there are paints available. My choice for this beast are all available in Vallejo's model air range with a side trip to AK's Xtreme Metal for the engine.

Don't forget that the Hellcat was also used by the FAA and so I do expect a FAA colour scheme to be in there too!

Potential future SWMBO is very much aware that my model building is part of my health management regime and mental stability  and I might have already interested her in having a go at building something!

While we know Steve is very much under his SWMBOs' thumb in it seems all spheres including our sacred hobby and might be the original downtrodden hen-pecked husband, I do wonder how much freedom is given by members SWMBO's to this hobby of ours!

8-) Good idea to lay the laws down beforehand , I got back into modelling about three years into marriage whilst visiting a garden centre that had a Tamiya Tiger so can't tell SWMBO it's a lifestyle choice. Think Ray Romano based Everybody loves Raymond on me

Given the size of the plane, I believe Dulux do a nice range of paint in the size of tins of the size needed for full coverage, along with a substantial range of applicators!! :laughing-rolling: All available at all leading DIY Stores

As I said in my post above.....

U.S Navy and U.S.M.C.

https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/producto/hobby/sets/air-war-en/us-navy-umsc-colors-wwii-1940-1945-71157-es/

Fleet Air Arm

https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/producto/hobby/sets/air-war-en/faa-fleet-air-arm-colors-1939-1945-71147-es/

Paints from those sets will cover the exterior with added ones for the interior..... Got it covered. Steve!

Ammo by Mig also do various paint sets. https://www.migjimenez.com/en/54-aircraft-paints-sets
You should find something there, and I've heard that they are excellent paints. I've been converted to their One Shot primer, but haven't tried the colours yet.
Cheers

Think Mr Chill got a point ,how much paint do you think it will use . I don't have an airbrush and my 24 Stuka used three pots of Vallejo so puts up the pennies :violin: . Is model air more economical  As ever thanks for the info chaps
