This kit was originally released in 2006 and is a reboxing of the original A6M5 Zeke from 2000 which in itself took the modelling world by storm because of the amount of detail and features. The original release was followed in 2001 with the M5 reboxed and included an action sound set.

This kit followed and included parts to build the Pearl Harbour aircraft of the A6M2b. At the same time Tamiya released two new paints in their range, the "correct" colour for the fuselage and the Metallic blue which is an outstanding rendition of the anticorrosion paint Aotake. To date, no other company has come close to getting that colour correct and that includes Vallejo.

In 2007 The M5 was released again which was a reboxing of the original with a different code (60318). I have this on order too.

On taking off the lid you see this:

Now when this is folded it makes a storage box for the kit when built. A nice idea for transportation etc. On removing this you get to the kit.

The box isn't small, it is about A3+ size and there are lots of plastic etc in the box. Also is another box that has all the small stuff in there.

So lets go through the box.

You will note two separate prop bosses, 1 for the 2b and one for the M5.

It comes with a stand.

So, what is in the box?

Not sure what this is for! Maybe the radio wire?

Now I have had a go at building this when it first came out. I must admit to being not up to it as I was recovering from injuries and didn't really understand what the kit was offering. It ended up in the bin eventually but all it was then was really something to take my mind off the pain etc.

I am looking at replacing the decal sheets with Maketar Masks and HGW stencils

Seatbelts from HGW

They have an M5 set too

Master models only has an M5 barrel set but only the wing cannon barrels should be different between the 2b and 5.

Eduard has a big ed set (I think) available so that's on the cards too!

Plenty to go at and get hold of for a winter build!

I am lucky enough to have the A6M5 sound actin version in my stash. It was reissued in Asia a few years ago.
This re-boxing seems to have the seatbelts and etched parts which weren't included in the earlier releases.

It's certainly a stunning kit. Eduard do a nice collection of etched details for the A6M5, but not sure about the other versions. I assume they do as it's a popular kit.

Edit: https://www.eduard.com/eduard/big-ed/ai ... html?cur=2 so, yes, they do a nice set!
Cheers
