Graham's U96 Build

Postby Graham » Sat Jan 31, 2015 7:55 pm

Well, with 15 issues delivered, I've been itching to get started on the U96 and decided to start this afternoon having seen Mustang's great progress.

So here we go. Parts 1 & 2 prepped and ready to go.

Dry fitted and all the parts and they fit perfectly.

Glue out and we're off...!

Will be up to more tonight and tomorrow. Really looking forward to this build.

It’s a long way to issue 140 Graham, you need a K for the that, will do that after this post.
Good luck with the build of this beautiful partwork model.

Been working on issues 1 - 7, and it all seems to be going very well. All the parts fitted beautifully, and using the bits from issue 8, everything aligned almost perfectly. I haven't joined parts 3 & 4 together yet, as it made handling the beast a lot easier - that will be the next stage...

Thanks Mark!

Parts 3 & 4 have now been glued together and the support beams added. She it one heck of a long model!!

Image

Now onto Parts 9-15. All bits prepped.

Image

I'm straying from the destructions a bit, and am putting the ribs onto each keel section before gluing/bolting them to the starboard side.

Image

Et voila!

Image

And that's as far as I can go until I get issues 16-19 with all the final ribs for the aft section, and nuts and bolts. Checked my Hatchette account and they've been dispatched, so should be with me early next week.

Been working on issues 16 - 19 today, and here's the progress...

Starting to glue the left hand structure to the right hand in sectors.

Then added the final frames that overlapped the joints.

Image

And the longitudinal supports.

Image

All completed.

Image

Now to set her aside on the buildboard with supports. (Have added an extra support midships now).

(New camera - so need a bit more playing around with it to get the images more in focus - must have used the wrong setting).

Now to wait 4 weeks for issues 20 - 23.
