My bodge up so far

One good thing about the being a shortage of Partworks in the UK for me is that it gives me the chance to continue, and hopefully finish existing builds such as my U96.

I was going to finish this but as we may be moving to a new house in the near future I decided to stop at deck level to minimize any damage upon the move.

One thing that worked for me with the brass seams was to use masking tape. I first bent them into shape, a pritt stick seemed to give the required curve in places, and placed them in position. Using masking tape strips to hold them in place I used Superglue, with the long thin nozzles for poundland, to run a thin strip of glue along the seams and allow capillary action to do the rest. Then I removed the tape and did the same procedure again with the glue in the gaps.

My next task was to fill the gaps between the removable top and hull once it had been glued into place.

I used filler and found the sand paper glued on thin strips the best to tidy things up.

Once done I painted as instructed.

This is where I am now

Finally finished my U96.

(Well I see that I still have to touch up the compartment edge where the brass is showing). The figures are Airfix Luftwaffe ground crew and painted in the colour of the U Boat crew I found online.

I wasn’t going to add all the deck superstructure until we had moved to a new house but as the housing market is dead it may be some while yet before we move, so I took the risk and finished it.

As always it didn’t all go to plan. I lost one tiny joining pin for the antenna and had to order a replacement. Then the final act was to add a tension wire to the flag post to finish. Twang…...flag post went flying ……………and so the wiring had to be done again as the superglue had blocked the holes in the joiners and had to be drilled out which cut the existing wire.

A few hours later and all careful back in place.

This time the tension wire was wrapped around the railing as well as the repainted and glued flag post.
