Altaya L'Ambitieux
All done now, I am glad that I decided to redo it. Whoops, I see that I still have to finish the top bannister rails.

A bit more work on the front with the addition of Anchor beams supports. It meant that I had to re-do the three brass wire curves, but hay ho

A bit more work.

The cannons have now been placed in position along with a few other bits

One gripe with this model is that the thread supplied is shiny golden brown nylon (left) , I there I am using left over brown cotton (right) from previous builds.

Thanks Mike,

I am looking forward to the rigging in a masochistic way.

I think, or rather hope I might have enough thread. The Hermione also has this shiny nylon thread as well. I don’t know why it’s now used in Partworks from France as it’s not easy to tie, too shiny and superglue doesn’t soak into it to seal the knots.

I might look again at eBay for extra thread if I run out.

The last four issues have been a bit fiddly but here they are. One was making the four spare spars that sit in a cradle either side of the two launches. Here I used my method of placing the spars in a drill and getting the ends to a point where they fitted into the relevant size hole to ensure they are correct. Then reversing the spars and using masking tape to protect the end in the drill bit. (I am sure I must tell my grandmother how to suck eggs!)

Then three issues on the bowsprit

Issue 114 was roping the launches into position and planting hooks and washers behind each Cannon. I guess for future rope work,

Issue 115 we making a start on the cannon port hatches. This issue suggested doing 10 at this stage but I have made a start of all of them and will make a couple a day as it’s fiddly and a bit boring.

Issues 116 and 117 were work on the foremast. It’s higher that I imagined so with the main mast being even higher it will be a tall ship. I will now start on 118 which is the detail on the mast and spars.
Only 22 issues to go now.

First, thank you for your kind comments which give me a real lift.

I have been busy on the masts and rigging these few weeks. Here are a few pics of progress to date.

The Rudder is now on, just needs a bit of touching up now. It was a bit delayed as I lost one of the brackets in the floor but the Vac managed to find it for me.

Image

The Bow mast was fixed in first. I had to do this a few times to get the roped fixings looking right.

Image

Then a small break with the steps on the side. Again parts were not suppied and I had to raid my spare box and stain accordingly.

Image

The yard arms. Only a couple of disaster’s here with the arms splitting in the drill.

Image

Then the masts in place and rigging starts

I placed my best tablecloth behind to show the rigging

Thanks you. Yes, the bit on the bow gave me a headache and looking at the next few issues it looks like it might give me some sleepless nights

Thank you

Now just finished number 129, and it’s been a challenging one. It’s taken over three weeks, off and on, to do the ratlines.
I am so grateful for issue 119 of the Black Pearl as that has supplied all the 0.15mm thread, the 2 x2mm wood and the extra 30 3.5 mm dead eyes I needed. In fact I bought a couple of these numbers and now have enough thread for the Hermione as well.
As you can see, I have had to alter some of my existing deadeyes as they were directly in front of the cannon. Not a good idea. Fortunately I mirrored the mistake the other side so it balances out.

Image

My preferred way of doing ratlines is by sowing the thread through the rigging. I draw lines on paper and cut them up to help me get the right positions or the cross ropes. In fact by holding the thread close to the paper it helps guide the needle and makes life easier.

Issue 130 looks complicated and I will have to use google translate big time.
