Rib 21 Lancaster Bomber

Postby woodie » Tue May 25, 2010 5:14 am

Has any one complained about the weakness of Rib 21 where the Aileron hole is drilled, at the trailing edge, this rib should be a little thicker as when stringing it snapped across the hole, and had to be repaired using a thin pice of metal to reinforce this area, this is not pointed out by Hachett, as an area to be careful with. Has any one had the same problem??

Hi Woodie, welcome to the forum.

Which issue did rib 21 come in ? Nobody has mentioned anything yet here.

Many of the wooden parts are very weak until assembled,in most cases the holes are placed very close to the edges on the ribs, the simple solution to this is to epoxy small plastic pre-drilled discs to the ribs before assembly, this will also strengthen the areas that eventually will have rods running through them.
Hachette have not given any card protection this time on fragile parts that get easily knocked and weakened in transit,on quite a few occasions I have found repairs need to be done before assembly.
Part 21 is provided in issue 3 and is the one nearest the wingtip assembly.
Barry.

Thanks Barry.

Yes, it is fragile ! Mine didn't break. You could also try soaking the end of the rib with super glue to strengthen it.
