Issue 92 - fitting the crew access door

Postby MBN Downunder » Sat May 11, 2013 1:55 am

In issue 92, the rear crew entry door is assembled and fitted to the rearmost fuselage section. Following the instructions carefully, I ended up with the outside (metal) surface of the door flush with the wood fuselage frame. In retrospect, this was a mistake - I should have allowed for the fuselage skin thickness and mounted the door protruding a bit.
Sure enough, in issue 110, the fuselage skin is fitted around the door and this leaves the door recessed (illustrated in the instructions on pg 679/680, steps 23 - 26). I am sure the real Lanc wouldn't have been like this!
Has anyone struck this problem and come up with an easy fix?
Seems to me the door has to be removed, the hinge attachments adjusted and the door refitted. However, with the rear fuselage sections now joined (and the skin section overlapping the joint) access to the inside of the door is very difficult. Might have to remove some stringers above the door?
Any helpful suggestions most welcome.
For those who haven't yet installed the door - take note!
Mike

good advice for all who have been waiting - but no wiseguy comments from here other than dismantling the door... :?
could the door skin be removed and mounted again with a kind of a spacer...

Haven't yet decided whether to leave the door as it is or try to fix it.
I did think of gluing an extra piece of skin on top of the door (would probably have enough from the scrap remainder from later skinning). Problem is the door handle. I might first try removing the door handle, which is superglued into a small hole in the outer door skin. Then I could fix it to the new piece of skin and glue onto the door, with a little bit of spacer if necessary.
Anyway, still thinking about the problem!
