Which glue(s) to use?

Postby rascal » Sat Mar 27, 2010 11:01 am

Hi -
Several glues have been mentioned in the construction of the Lanc. - I get the impression that the Aliphatic Resin type is a good one. But when should one use - 'super glues' or epoxy type glues (or others)? The part-one magazine seemed to suggest superglue, but the part-one DVD seemed to show the constructor using PVC type (cold-glue) occasionally dipping a cocktail stick into a small container of the stuff. Here in SA (as elsewhere, I'm sure) Alcolin sell their 'Professional' glue which is an aliphatic resin type.

Hi Russel,

For the wood, alaphatic glue or white glue is fine.

Superglue is best for sticking the plastic stringers on the airframe. I have found that painting the edges of the airframe with diluted PVA glue makes it easier to glue the plastic stringers.

Metal parts can be glued with either superglue or epoxy.

My web site usually mentions which glue I use for which operation. www.lancaster.partworkmodels.co.uk

Hi every one out there, I have found that common old balsa wood glue is ideal for stringers, it is not as visious on sticking to the fingers, apply, give it ten seconds and it will grab and hold with fingers slightly dampened and you will not stick.

Hi just as a little addition to this post as most people know that cynoacrylate (super glue) is water based and oxidizes after a short while I don't recomend this for building on a permanent basis as things start to fall apart after a few months. The glue I use is called fixal wich is a cynoacrylate glue but is resin based and will not oxidize the web site is http://www.fixsal.co.uk but it is expensive around £20 for a 50g bottle but its well worth the investment they do at times have special offers on for buying the full kit ie- the glue, accellerator, remover and a file of uv glass bond.hope this helps a little

A really first class cynoacrylate that will not break the bank is made by Warhammer, the cheap super glues are just that cheap and short lasting, give them a wide berth and go for the industrial versions that are capable of sticking metal wheel bearings into place, you get what you pay for and many of these poor adhesives are only partially refined.
A good method of assembly is to use ordinary PVA adhesive for the main wooden assembly and tack the corners to hold everything together with Cyno as the adhesive cures, for the heavy metal parts such as the engines etc a good fix is the ordinary slow drying Araldite, you only need a tiny amount but patience is needed for the drying and you may need to support the structures.
