SOME INTERESTING FACTS

Postby GOONBIRD » Thu Dec 01, 2011 12:31 am

Hi! This is my first post!
I thought that all you 'Lancasterphiles' might find this of interest.
The priest who married my wife and me 54 years ago on 7th December 1957 (date familiar?) was Rev. Alan Talbot.
He was a navigator in 617 squadron, under Leonard Cheshire. He asked me to read a passage in the book, 'Beyond the Tirpitz'. It mentioned that a member of the ground crew had called the crew of a Lancaster, just back from a raid, to come and look at something. There was a hole in the upper skin of one of the wings and inside a fuel tank was an unexploded bomb, presumably from another aircraft above theirs. "That is my Lancaster", Alan told me!
He also mentioned that they used to empty the Elsan during a raid!!! Pweh!

I am building the Hachette Lancaster, which I hope to present to Alan to raise funds for the Bomber Command Association.
I am nearly 75 and Alan is in his 80's, so I hope that I can accomplish this wish.
