Animal Planet Fridge Magnet Set

Postby royjess » Tue Apr 07, 2020 9:26 pm

I have a small collection of Fridge Magnets.

It all really started a few years ago with this Alton Towers Jigsaw magnet set

and built up to this

On one of our regular visit to our local Zoo last year, we saw a set of fridge magnets kit which was a special price of £2 when you purchase any other item from the shop.

The contents contained the paint, moulds, plaster of paris and instructions

Mixed up the plaster of paris

filled the moulds, (the photo shows the moulds semi filled, but I did pour more plaster into the moulds)

I gently tap the mould to get rid of any air bubbles. I left the plaster to dry for 24 hours before I removed the plaster shapes. I turned them over and gave them another 24 hours to dry.

They didn't come our perfect. there were some imperfections which I filled in using green putty.

I'm going to let the green stuff set before I paint. I won't be using the paint that came with the set, I'm hoping to use my airbrush with my Vallejo paint.

to be continued....

Nice collection. I used to collect a fridge magnet from each holiday or trip, then we moved into a flat with a stainless steel fridge :angry-banghead:
Cheers

Have you tried using a magnetic white memo board to display them?

Today I glued the magnets to the rear, only then did I discover that the magnets weren't all that powerful, so I'm going to see if I've got some more powerful ones to replace these.

I was about to get these painted and then disaster happened, they fell out from where I was storing them :(

So I purchased a small packet of plaster of Paris from off the net.

I then manage to make a few castings, not all survived as some broke when I removed them from the moulds. But here are the surviving ones

ImageIMG_3353 by Jess Lee, on Flickr

Ordered and fitted some stronger magnets

ImageIMG_3354 by Jess Lee, on Flickr

Applied a base coat of paint

Added some details and gave them several coats of satin varnish.

Picked out a set for myself and gave the rest to Jess

These are now finished. I forgot to also show you some of my other fridge magnets collection

My daughter got me this for Fathers day a few years back

And my latest set of fridge magnets, from Alton Towers, despite being in lock-down. I ordered these off their on line shop, I doubt that I be visiting Alton Towers for the foreseeable future due to shielding Jess from Covid-19

Jess also has a set of Fridge magnets, she has a few more parrot ones, but not on display due to space, something that I will sort out at a later date for her

The large blue Macaw head was given to us by Colchester Zoo as it was the last one and it was damage (missing beak tip and paint chipped), as you can see, I've restored it nicely
