Fairchild Boxcar

I'm going to build a diorama based around the Fairchild Boxcar.

I'm going to divided my kit into two build. Actually I'm going to use around a third of the kit to build a smaller plane and two thirds of the kit to build the Fairchild Boxcar. As the build progresses, all will be revealed.

Here is the kit that I'll be using, along with the decor sheet and with approximately two thirds of the contents

The missing third of the contents will be used to build a smaller plane which I hoping to enter for this year Xmas comp and the diary can be found here. viewtopic.php?f=172&t=6926&p=131848#p131848

I've started on the crashed fuselage, in the film, the propeller sheers off and becomes embedded onto the side of the fuselage.

To day I cut out that gash, it didn't need to be neat ;)

Some preparation before I paint the inside of the plane.

The propeller need to be thinned and have the tips rounded off. The kits come with quads propellers, but the plane in the film only had three on each. Despite having only three propellers, the angle of the two propellers that stick out of the plane is more at 90 degree angle, so I can only assume that in the film, the propellers either broke away from the shaft or they bent out of place. So to replicate this, I kept two of the propellers at 90 degree angle.

The cockpit has also been assembled.

The interior has now had it base coat of paint applied and is waiting for me to add some detailing with the paint.

It's been over a year since I started this build, but not abandon.

Today I started to put together the parts to make up for the crash scene.

The wings were removed, or shall I say they are now on my phoenix Xmas comp 2015 build viewtopic.php?f=172&t=6926&p=131848#p131848

I need to fill and sand the joins next. I also need to rough up and give the parts a battered appearance before I paint them.

I hope I won't leave it too long next time before I post another update

Thanks Morris,

As promised, I wasn't going to leave it as long as last time for an update.

Today I spent time making the parts look like they have been in a crash, the edges were serrated and I used boiling hot water to distort some of the parts. I had to use a file to reshape the nose to represent dents as if it was involved in a crash

Filler was applied to gaps and then I painted everything. The insulating in the wings were made from kitchen paper and PVA glue, which was painted yellow.

My next job is to apply the decor and then for me to weather the plane.

Thanks Casper

Just did a little today, I added some decor transfer, these were not screen accurate, so I had to mismatch a couple of them together to correct the decor.

Image

I also made a paper netting which will be use.

I took a look back over the film, and discovered that a couple of the parts that I made up, were not in the film after the crash, they fell off the plane during the crash. So I discarded the parts crossed off in the next pic.

Image

I added the paper netting that I made up and then weathered the parts and added a gloss coating.

There is nothing more for me to do with the actual models. My next step is to wait for spring (warmer weather) where I will build a display case to make a diorama
