Airfix Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary Set

Postby Andy616 » Thu Apr 27, 2017 9:51 pm

It's about time I put up a thread of what I've been working on since the Xmas competition.

From what I can tell, the models in the kit are fairly recent toolings and it's available for a similar price to the Heinkel model on its own so pretty good value. It will also give me an opportunity to practice with using an airbrush before attempting some more ambitious models.

One thing I did notice is that the stand is meant for 5 aircraft so there is a spare slot. I've bought a new tooling Airfix Ju87 B-1 to fill the gap.

It will be a very slow build due to time constraints over the next few months and I may do some other models in between aircraft but for now I have the Spitfire and Hurricane on the go.

I'll post some pictures up at the weekend.

Nice set !! The newly tooled Airfix kits are very good. I've build a couple.

Looking forward to your build diaries :D

Thanks guys, I've snapped a few pictures of how it stands at the moment.

It's my first time painting with an airbrush so it is a bit of an experiment. I've had a go at masking and painting the camouflage on the Hurricane.

The underside has been painted as well.

The paint has gone on thin enough to maintain the fabric detail which is very fine in 1:72 scale.

Image

I've partially masked up the spitfire, trying a mixture of modelling tape and sticky labels.

Other bits on the go.

You might have noticed that the pilot has had some leg surgery so that he fits in the cockpit. The Spitfire pilot required even more taking off to get him to fit. He's actually under the masking tape as he won't fit in once the two halves have been joined together. Good job I checked!

The Spitfire has been a much better fit than the Hurricane, which required a lot of filling around the wings where the top and bottom pieces sandwich together. This does seem to be a common issue with that particular kit.

The Dark Earth paint is Vallejo and the Dark Green and Sky are Tamiya.

Next up is to finish masking and painting the camouflage on the Spitfire before a giving both models a clear coat in preparation for the decals.

Nice work with the airbrush.
Good choice to add a Stuka, an ugly but fascinating beast.

Thanks guys. Apologies for the lack of updates. I have sprayed the camouflage on the Spitfire and masked up the canopy but that's as far as I've got. Unfortunately, working full time, studying for an exam in July and carrying out some necessary work on one of my cars hasn't left me with much time! :angry-banghead:

Long overdue update!

Apologies for the lack of progress pictures. I've only had time to work on the kit in short bursts so I didn't take any photos as I went along.

Both the Spitfire and the Hurricane are now finished:

I will try some weathering at a later date but I'm now putting this kit on hold to work on the Xmas competition and the kit from Corelki's competition.
