1/200 Prinz Eugen (scratchbuild)

Postby poulw » Thu Mar 14, 2013 10:04 pm

Hi everyone,

Some of you may remember me from the old Bismarck forum where i kept a build diary of French battleship Richelieu, and in 2010 started a similar scratchbuild diary of the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen.

However, two strokes (minor, thank goodness) set back the Prinz Eugen project until beginning of this year, where I again felt confident enough to use sharp tools like a scalpel etc.

Seeing that the old forum in the meantime has been abandoned, I am now joining here to continue posting.

Very little information in the form of drawings and details is available on the ship, so while I am sanding the hull (that's where I left when I had my first setback) I am now in the process of making workable drawings on how to produce all the necessary parts needed for the build.
As an example, here is a pic of one of the three water intakes:

So from hereon my special measure of a ruler replacement will be back ;) :

We're delighted to see you back Poul. Glad you've recovered from your strokes.

For those who don't know, here is a link to the first section of Poul's build.

Here is a link to Poul's Richelieu build diary. It's a fantastic build and the finished model is amazing.

I'm glad the matchsticks are back :D

Thanks for the nice welcome mates! :D

I maintain a strict diary of every little manufactured piece I make.
Richelieu ended up just over 7,600 pieces, but a rough calculation tells me that the Prinz will end up around 9-10,000 pieces.
So to finish the Prinz in 3 years, which is my goal, means that I have to produce a minimum of 25 pieces per day on average - weekends included :superlglue:

The next couple of years will hopefully be pretty busy in the shipyard :tools-hammerdrill:
Cheers .... Poul

(she has lovely lines doesn't she?)
and today I made the false deck so I am ready for planking when the hull is finished

Tomorrow though the task will be to finish the front (the two anchor positions).

I have now made the anchor parking positions, but the finishing touches (= filling and sanding) still remain:

The rear position:

and with the anchor in place (dry fitted only)

22 anchor rear2.jpg

Front positions:

(Funny how the grey colour turns blue on some pictures :o )

Filling and sanding the anchor positions will keep me occupied the next couple of days :angry-banghead:

Slowly getting there.
It took a while to solve the construction of the funnel section, but in the end I got there.

Here is my drawing of the funnel top:
