pocher 1:8 testarossa - a crazy rebuild to koenig special

Postby baby_astons » Sun Oct 05, 2014 5:47 pm

here you have it gents, have got my hands on a pretty tatty (I'm being polite) pocher testarossa (160€ including shipment) -
the poor soul has a completely sagged suspenion, sagged doors, a misaligned boot lid, an out of order engine top as well as a lot of missing parts -
now onto a short review of what has arrived here:

the dead fezza:

some highlights from it's heavy earlier life:
the door

the engine compartment
Image

the tortured and badly painted engine cover

now it wouldn't be me if I didn't have a crazy plan to revive this redhead so it could proudly take place in my 1:8 fleet,
some of you keen on ferrari might have heard the name of willy koenig, a ferrari workshop owner from munich,
who started modifying supercars to extra-supercars for customers who had grown bored by their mercedes, porsche, bmw or even ferraris,
he added a few turbos here, a supercharger there, had grown heavy flanks and extra big tyres and churned out around 800 bhp from your ordinary testa,
with the help of two turbos and a turbocharger even 1000 bhp were delivered...

I always loved these bragging fat pumped up cars, so the choice for my testa is as following:
it'll be the double-turbo special (didn't like the competizione becaouse it had the ugly spoiler at the back), maybe i'll ask willy to add a supercharger as well, let's see:
Image

and now the road to there:
first of all, room needs to be made for the fat tyres (I decided to use the tyres form the nissan gtr partworks model) as well as the side gills of the testa have to go,
so it looks a bit more like it should always looked: clean and mean:

drawn a line on the front wings:
Image

and took off the necessary material using a big fat rasp
Image

next up was drawing on the scheduled cutouts on the rear wings, pocher must have used up a pretty large chunk of the world metal resources,
the walls a frightningly thick and are a real challenge to my minicraft tool and the cutting wheels:
Image

it's a unbelievable task, eating up cutting wheels at a mind boggling speed, never mind the minicraft fuse cutting out all the time:
Image

look from the back side:

...and a close up of the whole affair after I finished the offside:
Image

need a break now as it's truly exhausting... stay tuned for more distruction...

oooohhhhhhh, I need to share this immediately,
have bought some really nice aftermarket rims for the testa, unfortunately those were made for the f40 tyres so the size was too small for the envisaged use of the nissan gtr tyres -
I needed 68mm rims and thsoe are impossible to get, so much headache went down the time (while I was working on the model, more piccies soon) -
yesterday an amazing idea struck me while I played around with the original nissan rim -

it has 10 spokes, 5 could be removed to have something remotely familiar to ferrari wheels - well after all, the car is also only remotely a ferrari when it's finished...
so this was the idea:
Image

and this is how the idea turned out after one and a half hours of hard work -
the spokes were cut off with a grinding wheel on one side, with a saw on the outer edge, a heavy file took off a bit of material, the rest was grinded away with a rotational tool and finally, the fine work was done with a needle file and a rotating sanding wheel
Image

I think I like it...

more has happened - in fact more cutting wheels have been destroyed -
if this continues at this pace, I might buy shares in the company like paul did with the :superlglue:

as this ferrari needs a lot of fresh air, new NACA ducts have been taped
Image

and cut
Image

the original headlight fairings needed to be removed
Image
as there'll be fixed double headlights instead of the pop-up thingies

while at it, the fins were removed from the doors, as they were fairly hefty items I cut half the door rather than grinding the strakes away
Image

and as if this wouldn't have been enough, I discovered that the sides needed further removal of metal or the water coolers would have been visible only partially
Image

now if you think this is it, stay prepared for more metal removal - I'm starting to feel like a gang of yank pimp-my-ride maniacs cutting up heavy metal...
