1/5th working engine

Postby R2D2 » Sun Apr 09, 2017 9:33 pm

Also bought a 1/5th scale working Mazda Rotary Engine! Complete with motor and working parts. I know its not 1/8th scale but it was only £9.50 + £2.80 postage.

Hello R2D2, looking forward to what should be an interesting build which I for 1 will be following, the original was designed by frank Wankel in the 50s.
Came across this for those who may be interested http://www.animatedengines.com/wankel.html sorry for the "thread jack"  ;)
Coming second place makes you the fastest loser.

Instructions. Most of it is in Japanese but there are also printed instructions in broken English! this seems to be quite an
old kit!

Main engine temporary put together. The clever thing is its moulded in clear plastic but the rear half has been sprayed silver. Quite good detailing for a old kit.

More parts including a huge air filter. I think these could do with painting.

The first thing I did was test the motor and it didn't work. I stripped it down and found it was gummed up with dried out grease. Ive found this problem before with Japanese motors! They tend to put grease in there motors to lubricate them but over a period of time the grease dries out and cloggs up the armature! I cleaned it out and substituted the grease with thin watch makers oil instead! This worked and the motor now runs fine! These are all the bits for the motor but no instructions how to put it together! I figured it out though.

Main rotory parts temp fitted together. I made the mistake of taking all the bits of the sprus at one go and as the individual parts were not numbered it took quite a while to line the parts up and get them in the right order. Its still not revolving freely but fortunatly this section it screwed together so can be taken apart and readjusted.

Nice one, I've always liked the rotary engine. There was a guy at a car meet I attended recently who had an immaculate FB RX-7 but also had a moving cutaway of the 12A engine mounted on a plinth. A really cool bit of engineering.
