Etched Star Wars Tie Fighter kit

You kbnow you sometimes see something, and you just have to buy it ? Regardless of how much flak you're going to get ?
I call it scale constipation. You just can't pass the model :laughing-rolling: (Sorry  )

This is one such kit, I found on line in China. Made by a company called Metal Golem. Never heard of them, can't find out anything about them, no company details in the kit, Google is stumped, and it's probably not a licensed product anyway !

It's presented in a nice metal box, with laser etched logo.

Image

Three beautiful nickel silver etched frets. All individually wrapped.

Image

The detail is incredible. The centre cockpit is very tiny, and I think it's going ot be a challenging model !

Image

Then we come to the instructions, or at least, what is supposed to pass for instructions :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:
That is the only documentation in the kit. Just three drawings ! This could involve a tiny drop of superglue, and lots of :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

Image

Not going to start it just yet, but I couldn't resist sharing the photos of the kit with you.
Cheers

Nice looking kit, instructions could be better. George Lucas is very ruthless with unofficial merchandise now Disney own Star Wars as well get it soon before they see this.

There are several other Star Wars kits in the same range, but doesn't seem to be an X wing sadly.
They also do some Star trek models as well.

I suspect that is why they are only available
On China, and there are no contact details
In the kit :laughing-rolling:

I got it from Taobao.com, but it's only in Chinese, and impossible to use unless you live in China I think. Being able to speak Chinese would be a help as well.........

There are some other Star Wars kits. The AT AT walker, and the two legged walker amongst others. It's a real shame they don't seem to do an X wing though.

Well, I know I said I wasn't going to start this just yet, but......... well, it was a quiet Sunday, Laura was painting her Egg Plane (photos later if you promise not to laugh !) so I needed something to do that didn't take too much concentration, and could be stopped at any time... and it was sitting there, all nice and shiny..... OK, ok ! So shoot me (again :laughing-rolling: )

The side panels (wings, whatever ?) are two sheets glued back to back so you get the detail both sides. Then the radial beams are a separate parts, giving the panels a lot of depth. I sanded the backs of the parts to give the glue a fighting chance. The panels have an annoying curve that had to be carefully bent out. Once they are more or less flat, gluing them together makes them just about perfect. I gave them a liberal coat of glue, then held them together with 6 pegs and left them for 20 mins to make sure the glue was properly set. Then the radial beams are glued into the half etched recesses. They fit perfectly !

Image

The cockpit is challenging. A masterpiece of design to make this spheroid out of a single part, but it makes it very tricky to fold up. I started by folding the front half into shape.

Image

This is as far as I got before I had to put the kit down for the day.

Image

So far this kit really is a mixed bag. The cockpit is very tricky to fold, but so far everything has fitted perfectly. Shame about the instructions, but what would life be without challenges !!

I managed to find some Chinese Ebay sellers offering these kits.

Here are some links that may be of interest. I've no idea how good/bad these sellers are though.

Can't find this Tie Fighter though.... but there are some other StarWars kits there.

Before anybody goes rushing off to order the kit, it's all gone down hill rapidly :angry-banghead:

The centre bar is a flat bit of metal, folded square. It's almost impossible to fold up, and the darn thing doesn't fit :angry-banghead: there is a larger square that goes over this, which is easier to fold, but that doesn't close up properly because the inner is too big. :angry-banghead:

I put it down before I threw it down, and I'll come back to it in a few days time with fresh eyes. Perhaps something will dawn on me. I'll post some photos when I get a chance.

That's strange. I checked them and they seem OK, and presumably worked for Casper as he remarked about one of the kits. Perrhaps they won't ship to Austria  Not that I've heard about problems with Austria, although a lot of people seem to have problems with Italy.

Anyway, on to the photos.

This is the troublesome square tube. It's not closed quite properly, which is probably not hepling matters. I couldn't get it to fold without the aid of an etchmate. I prefer photo etch pliers, but they didn'[t work at all this time.....

Image

This is the larger square tube, which wasn't too difficult to fold.

Image

Looks OK from the front.......

Image

But the back won't close up at all. Ihad to splay out the little triangles at the end to get the longer tube to go in at all.

looks like you have to get a really sharp bend and i would imagine its really hard to do on the small inner tube Mark.
Never used a etchmate before and wouldn't know where to start
After looking through the links Mark I found all sorts of ships and would you believe a Helicopter :o
and this nice little Bismarck
