M113 APC

Postby Mark » Wed Mar 07, 2018 5:59 am

This is going to be a brief intermission during my other projects. It's Tamiya's M113 APC which will be a quick OOB build, but with a somewhat non-standard colour scheme and a few modifications. I was inspired by a politically incorrect meme on Facebook, but more of that when I get to the mods and paint. I was in two minds whether to do it or not, but I was in the local hobby shop, and they had the kit, complete with figures for less than a tenner :o :D

The kit is a 1974 tooling, but doesn't look too bad for its age.

There's a fair bit in the box, including a fairly basic interior. However, it's a quick project so I'll skip most of the interior.
Rubber band tracks, which I though about replacing. However, there are side skirts, so you can't see the top of the track anyway.

You also get a sprue of figures. I'm not sure whether I'll use these or not. I may use the commander.

Watch this space....

This is all I'm doing of the interior. The front drive shafts are needed to locate the drive wheels properly.
I may look to see if the commander needs something to stand on as well.

But I think I've made a wheely good start..... (Sorry, I'll shut the door on the way out... )

I did slightly more to the interior. The bulkheads to give it a bit more strength, the driver's seat, in the elevated position, and the little step that the commander stands on.

The inside should be white, so I gave it a coat of white primer.

And here is the majority of the bodywork fitted.

The main assembly is virtually complete now.

A coat of primer revealed a sunken filled hole and a few other defects that needed correcting.

Ooops, posted the wrong photo. Here is the model with the coat of primer

Here she is with the start of a yellow paint job. It's not as green as it looks in the photo. Blame iffy white balance! I'm actually using Yllejo golden yellow, but I think it should be a slightly orange yellow. The hatched are glued on with a couple of dabs of Kyrstal Klear. Mainly to keep the yellow paint out of the hull. They will come off easily.

After about 10 coats of yellow (did I mention, I hate painting yellow!) I've got a reasonably even coat of yellow. I'm not convinced that it's quite the right shade, but it's close enough.

Note quite sure where I'm going next. Might well be tracks..... The wheels need the rubber tyres painting too.

The tyres got a coat of Tamiya rubber black. Sort of a blue-black which does look much better than a straight black for rubber.
The side skirts had their masking tape pulled off, and it's all had a coat of gloss clear.

Any guesses as to what the livery is yet? Extra points if you can post a meme!!

Nah, wrong direction.

A friend has advised me that the black strips aren’t wide enough.
