The Endeavour - Spellbinder99 + 1

Postby Spellbinder99 » Sun Jul 04, 2010 3:26 am

I picked the first two parts of this up the other day and decided that I would involve my five year old daughter as much as possible with the build. Quite apart from the fact she is allways interested in the models I work on I felt it would be a good way to introduce her to some Australian history as well.

The parts look pretty good, a little sanding needed to smooth off edges and ease the rib slots to get everything to slide together but nothing untoward for these sort of partwork kits. It looks like their quality control on parts may need work as the decking plywood from part one is noticeably a different thickness from the same (but mirrored) part in Part two. I bougt a spare of Part One but that deck was different again from the other two!
The solution may be to install packing pieces on the bulkhead tops to make the pieces flush, but I will leave any decking until the entire basic frame of the hull is essentially complete so that mismatches can be all dealt with at one time.

Sorry for the poor pictures but this is where we are at now.
A hint for assembly is to use the decking ply as a jig to make sure the bulkheads dry at right angles. Sand the slots smooth and drop them in place while the glue is setting and they pretty much have to end up in the right place. The glue included with part one seems to work pretty well, all I added was an over-fillet of my normal PVA (white) glue to make sure a rigid joint was achieved.

Cheers

Looks good so far, I won't do any decking probaly until I have the hull all planked, then I'll work my way upwards.

What a lovely idea involving your daughter, this is a commendable way to introduce the modellers of tomorrow to real model building in wood,it looks as if it going to be a very interesting build, good luck with it !

Fantastic idea getting her involved. She will soon be skilled in rigging, planking tearing hair out of head!

Hi Spellbinder
Have a K for getting your daughter involved with your build, you should feel proud not many dad's can do that.
Good luck with the build.

Great start Spellbinder (and daughter) :D

It is wonderful to involve your daughter in this day and age where kids only know computers and TV games. My daughter is now 10 and she has become quite good at building plastic models - had not thought of involving her in a wooden model but will do a little later in the Victory build.

Look forward to your next instalment

Thanks guys, she is a clever little thing and wants to be involved with things she sees me doing, so I figured even if I get her to squeeze some glue on parts or rub an edge over with sandpaper she can feel she is involved. Hopefully the next part will be in the newsagent tomorrow.

Cheers

It's brilliant getting a little one involved. My daughter is only 2 1/2 and likes to sit on my knee while I model. Unfortunately she hasn't quite got to understand that "don't touch" means longer than 5 seconds ! (usually when I'm painting !)

I picked up part 3 yesterday and assembled it pretty much straight away. Again there are issues with the next keel section being thicker than the preceeding one but once the strengthening plates were firmly glued it did not seem to make much difference and everything seems to have lined up OK.

Thus far I have just had Leah (my daughter) brush some glue on the joints and I have explained what some of the parts do, like the keel. She seems interested and I will post a picture of the progress later.

Cheers

Assembled part 4 and bought a spare copy of part 4 so I could continue planking and fit the complete mid lower deck. This kept the whole structure nice and straight and allowed more planking progress.

Image

I used some scrap ply from a Lancaster fret to strengthen the deck joint.

I assembled all the basic structure and planked after putting all the decks in. This allowed me to glue the four deck sections in and sand them smooth before planking.

Image

The nails and plank ends are drawn in with pencil, they are the actual plank ends, I just hilighted then.

Certainly getting bigger and the basic structure is only half done.

Great job on the planking! :)

it is quite fascinating seeing the differences in the building process between your Endeavour and the Victory - suppose its true what they say that there are many ways to skin a cat

Other thing, I find interesting is the way different people build the same model. :)
