Just out of curiosity why do partwork ships have their hulls double planked  is it just a way of increasing the number issues and therefore more profit for little materials

Double planking makes it easier to get a better finish on the second layer, especially for first time plankers. I also suspect that it partly gives them an excuse to sell you more issues to make more profits too

Lots of boxes kits have double planking. The first layer is a soft cheap wood, easy to work. The second is a decorative hard wood that is harder to work. Hence it’s only a veneer of thin planks.
It would be a nightmare to try and plank a hull with 2mm thick hardwood planks.

Cost wise, double planking is cheaper to.
