A new project: an engine shed

Postby 70'sdreamer » Sat Jan 11, 2014 12:44 am

I decided to make the layout a bit bigger again (and for the last time because there's no more place in the attic after that):

An engine shed with a roundhouse and a turntable, for my steam engines, with a coaling station and some other things which are necessary for steam engines.
The roundhouse will have 12 stands for engines.
Here is the first part (6 stands), a model by "Vollmer", a German firm for model railway buildings which will sadly be closed in August 2014:

Gas tank (the steps weren't included, I took them from some parts which were left over from another building)
Image

The ventilators didn't belong in the windows, it was my idea to place them there (like it was made often in old buildings)
Image

Image

The small buildings on the back are made by myself out of parts which were left over in this construction kit (one wall isn't built in because the second roundhouse with another 6 stands will be built on that side)

The doors open and close if a loco goes through (click on the pic to start video):

Nice work Stefan. Love all the detailing on the building. Was the roof persuaded, or is that your own painting ?
Cheers

Nice roundhouse Stefan - that will look really great.

Sorry Stefan, not laughing at your efforts, just Mark's (I think) predictive computer. How do you persuade a roof to weather itself? :D Pre-shade perhaps?

It was pre-shaded. But if the whole roundhouse is finsish it will be (cautious) weathered, and also the other building that belong to this area. I think around steam engines everything has to look a bit "dirty" and "used"...

Very nice.

Nice build diary.

Are you planning to do a lighting project for it?

In the meantime the engine shed took place on the layout, and also got lights.
Some more pics will come tonight.

Here you can see the whole part of the new layout area, where the engine shed will be placed

Image

That's the plan for the tracks

The plan above was the second one - and the real thing will be different from this plan again...

An engine shed also needs an office building, and I decided to use this "Vollmer" building for that

Image

Image

The buidling set includes parts for two different buildings, so I thought I can use both of them together. So the office also got the water crane which is normally used for the second kind of building. This means the building has to stay on a track, and not beside anywhere on the area.
Plan has to be changed another time...

Inside the building there will be built in some office details, so the building has to get a "second flor".
That's the way I did it:

The "second flor" can be taken off to place desks and figures later.

I also have some oil fired steam engines, so the engine shed area has to get an oil filling station for these locos

And here's the first try how the buildings will be placed later
