N gauge Viafier Retica*.....

Postby Swordfish Fairey » Sat Dec 19, 2015 10:36 pm

After many years of being an enthusiast (and customer)of the Rhaetian railway in Switzerland I have decided to start an N gauge layout using the new Kato "Glacier Express" models..........
I have some H0m Bemo models but they are too big for the room I have available and as that room is likely to get smaller in the near future, N is the way for me to go............

I have two sets at the moment, the World heritage set with GE/4.4111 loco and six Panorama coaches...
Image

And an ABe8/12 Allegra 3 car multiple unit set.....
Image

Here are both sets out and about on my desk..........
Image

I'm using Kato Unitrack and the rolling stock runs beautifully on it, it does look a little "clunky" but that can be fixed with a bit of work...............

kato only do 2 buildings specifically for Swiss railways at the moment, (Filisur station building and the island platform set) but there are plenty of other manufacturers to fill the void...............
Image

The Allegra is a lovely little model with its close coupling system and directional lighting.............
Image

The panorama coaches are very nice too, when you consider they are only 5 inches long...........
Image

*Viafier retica is the name in Swiss Romansh,Ferrovia Retica in Italian and Rhätische Bahn in German...A little taster of the real thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGnZnJQQ2Sg Watch out for my WHF loco at 2:13 & 4:45 on Solis and Landwasser viaducts.............

I found a layout plan in an old Miba magazine and with a little modification it will suit my purposes perfectly...............
Image

The spiral may go being replaced by a viaduct exiting to the fiddle yard via a cliff face "Landwasser" style...........

The original "fiddle yard" was too big as I should only need 4-5 tracks.................

If you want some help with other plans for inspiration, let me know. What dimensions are you going to make the layout?

I'm thinking along the lines of 4 times 3' x 1'6" boards, I should be able to squeeze it all in to 12 foot   .....I will worry about the fiddle yard later................Thanks for the offer but I think this is the one for me.......................Tony

A nice little set there, I'll be following this thread with interest.

Will you modular your base boards for storage and transportation?

With typical Japanese efficiency the Loco and two coaches fit into the folder that contain the other four coaches, and they then fit into my bookcase when not being used.  ...........

I've been having a play with a couple of Kato Japanese wagons I bought for a fiver at the local Toy & Train fair over Christmas...................

This is the before shot..........
Image

This is the after.................
Image

It has had a new roof fitted made from scored Plasti-card and will be painted Humbrol aluminium............
Image

Image

I found a few side views from an old catalogue, scanned them into my computer and printed them out to size...................
Image

Then glued them to the wagon sides with Elmers Glue-All...............

Had a brainstorm last week wandering around the model railway shop in Weston-Super-Mare, (Modelmasters)...................I bought a couple of Kibri "Albula" viaduct kits and will try and re-create the "Brusio spiral" on my layout.............
Image
Look at them "Bernina" coaches..................The first coach is a standard Rhb one......................

This is what I am using, only 6 arches so I need two of them................

Take a look on ebay Germany for some good bargains as well. I saved a fortune over what I would pay in this country and the selection of N gauge on offer is much bigger.

The Kibri Viaducts are coming together with a fight, not the easiest thing I've ever built, but they do look the part.................
Image

Image

Image

I've added the blocks under the top to give it a bit more realism and I'm going to use Peco "Setrack" for the actual viaduct with a Kato adaptor track at either end, (as in the photo below)...This is because the ballast on the viaduct is very flat and also Kato don't do a correct radius piece of curved track to suit...........
Image

The RhB plate in the pictures I bought at "Eurotrack in Southampton last weekend, and very "chuffed" with it too,(excuse the pun)...........It was a great show with lots of Continental railways and top of the list "Majola" A Swiss RhB layout in H0m..............

Tony

You don't notice it very much in the pictures but it does slope down to half the original height.................
