A few errors creeping in?

Postby number1 » Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:21 pm

Hope this is'nt a sign of things to come, but a couple of errors are apparent in issue 20 concerning the deck pieces 104 & 105, they should be shaped exactly as the parts list and photo instructions regarding the "small extentions" which should rest on top of the frames, nothing that cant be fixed with a saw and a bit of glue but thats not the point when your spending good money on something. Theres also no mention of beam 38b, surely this should now be glued beneath deck piece 104?

cheers
Les

Hi Les, not sure what what error's you're pointing out, are you talking about sanding the sides of deck pieces 104 and 105 until they're flush with the hull bulkheads? If so then that is very briefly covered in Issue 22.

The "small extentions", are you referring to parts 103 and 102? These were missed and included in Issue 24. But seeing as we're not gluing down decks 104 and 105 yet this shouldn't be a problem.

As for 38b, it's my understanding that this small rod will be made like the rest of the deck supports so you can remove the deck to gain access to inside the hull, seeing as 104 is directly above the servo harness. While you could glue it down if you do not wish to make your model a RC model, I've found it's a lot easier to do the planking without any decks glued down, and that also goes with forward deck pieces 59 and 60, which I wish I hadn't blindly followed the instructions and glued them down.

Ive just sellotaped 38b in place on the bulkhead top so that it does not get lost and will await further instruction.

I agree with you, Jinnai, about deck pieces 59 and 60. I should have learnt my lesson when building Bismarck, which also glued the equivalent deck pieces in place at an early stage and then we were told to "paint" the inside of the planks with the wood glue to ensure a good seal (I actually used a light, 30 minute setting 2-part resin, used in model aircraft). Trying to get to the forward area with those deck plates on was very difficult, fortunately the resin is very runny when first mixed so I could pour it in and then revolve the boat frame so that the resin spread all over the bow inside area.

Hi Jinnai, have a good look at your deck pieces 104 & 105 and compare them with the parts plan and the photographic instructions you should see the difference,
besides deck piece 104 wont fit until the "small extention" for want of a different word is removed, theres nothing to support the rear of deck piece 105 which abutts deck piece 104. to fix this I have added two small pieces of scrap wood to the side of frame 39 and added a small piece of wood to form a lip under part 104 so now part 105 has something to support it.

hope this helps

Ah, I see what you mean now. My 105 is being held in place by friction alone, and I think everyone so far has had to trim 104 in order for to fit. Thanks for clarifying. :)

Hi Les
I have not long started my Hood - I waited until I had all the issues before starting. I also live in the south of France so picked up my issues from my UK postal address on the few occasions I went to the UK. I have reached unit 20 and found exactly the same as you, and also done the same as you with extra lip piece (on 104) and support pieces (on beam 39). I was intrigued as to what to do at the other end until I realised that sub-assembly B is to be removable (as mentioned in issue 21) and the extension piece on 104 was getting in the way!

I went through all the build projects (I particularly like zeptrader and refer to his individual issue builds all the time) and searched high and low for this error but to no avail until the last one which is yours!!

Glad to have found that you posted the problem as I was beginning to think that I was the only one with a rogue fret!!
