Altaya L'Ambitieux

It’s not really a build diary but a construction blog in a way, as I can only collect the issues in bundles when I visit France.

I have to admit being a bit nervous about doing this as I am no expert modeller.

However, so far this model has been much easier to make that the SOTS. The SOTS is more detailed and accurate in my opinion but is much more labour intensive. For example the gun ports took on average one hour each port on the SOTS but only 10 minutes on the L'Ambitieux. The cannon on L'Ambitieux come only in two sections.

I have chosen to paint the cannon red and introduced some French blue in the decorations, otherwise I have followed the build as instructed

I am now back from France with the latest batch of issues. As my Mustang and Citroen are up to date I am concentrating on L’Ambitieux.
I am working on the hull first with the second final strips of décor wood. My preference is to use PVA instead of contact glue. I pin as much as I can and the final pieces are held in place by masking tape.

Finished and now needs sanding

Hull is now sanded smooth enough for the moment. I will need to do a lot more work on the lower hull later when I paint it white. I wanted to compare wood dyes to pick one that I prefer.

Update.
This time it’s the raised strakes around the Hull. The Walnut pieces were new to me and made a pleasant change from simply staining the same type of wood.
The instructions were to use instant glue but it didn’t take me long to realise that it was disaster for me to do it that way. Superglue everywhere and no chance to move pieces into position.
Very reluctantly I used PVA. Not an ideal choice as I needed to drill holes in the strips to clamp them into position. That’s ok on the lower ones as I they will be painted black but not so good on the upper ones which will remain as they are. I am now looking for a walnut filler to fill the holes.

A few more bits for the launches and a new use for Ikea pencils.

I have been busy again on the Hull. I want to paint the Hull white and so I had to do that ahead of the instructions as I didn’t want to damage the delicate railings which are the next on the list.
The first coat of white undercoat showed lots of cracks that I missed in my sanding. Several filling, sanding and coats of paint later I got to that ‘it’s not perfect but I am happy with that’ moment.

Then on to the railings and for some reason I didn’t have enough wood. So its ground to a halt for the moment until I collect my next bunch of issues in December.

It was all going so well.

Then I started the transom and things started to go so very wrong.

I made the mistake of trying to glue the pieces together all at once and didn't notice that they slipped until the PVA had dried.

I tried to pull the pieces apart but they started to disintegrate so I stopped and made the best of a bad job.

I thought of getting the issues again but I didn't think it was worth the money.

So I will just make do and mend.

When the glitzy decorations are placed in position I will see if I can manage.

I have done what I can on these for the moment. I feel sure I will have to re-visit them at a later dat

Started to paint the blue at the top
Image
I’ve one and also the black bits painted as far as I can do at this stage as I don’t yet know the measurements of where the black starts on the bottom.
Side were re-stained with light oak and the whole was then covered in matt varnish.

Now up to issue 81 and have to wait until my next visit in March to continue.

I am really enjoying this build, despite the hiccups.
As Altaya is part of the De Agustini group I am sure that this will be on sale in the UK at some point

Thank you Casper,
I will see how the gilded decorations fit when I get the in March. They may fit OK with only a little remodelling of the Transoms……….I hope
