San Francisco Cross Section

Postby Mustang » Mon Aug 20, 2018 10:08 pm

Started to build this cross section from Artesania,

Image

But I wanted to change some of it.

I didn't like the way the ribs are done as it looks wrong, so I wanted to deduce the outer walls and add an inner side wall to the Galleon as the model doesn't

First job was to deduce the thickness of the ribs.
Image

But I needed to keep the beam supports for later.

I built the ribs up as per the institutions as secured the bottom floor with tape while I built up the inner walls, the lighter pieces of woods are the main support of the new deck beams
Image

In order to work out the hight of the decks I added them in as a dry run so they are not glued in place. I did mark on the ribs before removing the deck supports where they went.

Once I had added the new inner walls, I need to get the walls to continue down to the bottom of the keel as shown by the line.
Image

I also wanted to extend the ends of the galleon by 10mm either end, so I need to build new end sections.
Image

All I needed to do was add 10mm sections to the rib sides.
Image

This is what I ended up with.

I also wanted to change the ribs from what you will see, so added some thin walnut.

That's a great improvement over the original kit Mustang. Have to say, that the oob kit (or at least the picture on the lid) looks far from my idea of museum quality.
Cheers

Thank you Mark, I agree this is not a museum piece if you build it straight oob, I hope what I've got in mind to do will make it look a lot more like a museum piece.

I then need to replace the deck supports that I removed.

Needed to reshape them.

All replaced, and new deck beams added.

Next the second deck, I penciled in the lines on the bottom so it looked more like planks when viewed, this wasn't in the instructions.
Image

You'll notice I've added the mast support also, the instruction don't added these until all the desk are in.
Image

Once the deck had been temporally added I added the 10mm to the ends.
Image

The other end has the opening for the gratting, the instructions show the beam left in which I didn't like so that was removed, as I've extended the ends it means I can close of this area so it looks better. Which you will see later on in the build, also ill be changing the way the ladders are done as again they don't look right.

Nice work on the planking Ian. Looks very effective. Your improvements are making the model a lot better than the original design.
Cheers

Thanks guys.

Middle deck in, there is a very slight gap along the edge which the camera didn't pick up.
Image

But I wasn't worried as I've added the Waterway.
Image

This is the deck finished, the instructions then go on to install the next deck, but I'll be jumping a little bit to add the parts that will be hard to do once the next deck is in place.
Image

You can see in the photo where I have extended the decks by the 10mm this was so I could close of the hatch area, so the hatch is 5mm wider and 5mm on the deck.

Thank you Casper.

So the instructions tell you to carry on with the next deck, which is fine except trying to get the following in would be a little hard.

The Capstan.

I replaced the white pole piece of wood with a darker piece which I had to make from a square piece.
Image

I also drilled the bottom piece so the pole had more support then just sitting on top, I also made it longer so it goes into the next deck so I can aline the upper capstan.

So the deck parts are in place, you can also see that I have closed of the grating so it looks better. I also done this because the upper deck supports are shown inline with the bottom once, this would mean they sit on top of the grating edge support which is wrong so I'll be moving them about 2mm towards the ship sides.

Next the canons which again you don't install until the upper deck is in.

This is how the instructions show then, don't look that great.
Image

Image

So a little look on the www and I see they can also be done like this.
Image

Image

All the ropes have had wood glue rubbed into them so they stiffen up as these will go in later.
